Peterborough Eco Education Awards 2012

Category: Education

Date: 22.04.2013

Time: 13:48

Before the Olympic Torch arrives in Peterborough on the 3rd of July the main event of the day is Peterborough Eco Awards 2012.
This event showcases the brilliant Eco projects going on in Peterborough schools across the city. 21 schools will be coming along with displays about their projects (and hopefully some food samples for us to try) and sharing their ideas with each other.

While the judges are going round making their decisions in each category, 12 environmental organisations from Peterborough will be providing activities and games for the 120 pupils. The children will also be having a go at a quiz and competition and writing blogs about what they have been doing at the event. The keenly contested Eco Factor Award is voted for by the pupils themselves for the most informative and interesting display.

In the afternoon there will be a wide range of presentations celebrating all the schools achievements attended by the Deputy Mayor, local councillors and a range of organisations who have supported the awards and donated prizes.

So come and have a read tomorrow and find out what the pupils were doing and find out the results.

Today has been great fun at the eco awards, there have been lots of great activities and people. We started of by setting up our display then we had a look around at all the displays

I especially liked the Jack Hunt one, they made models of their outdoor area they even bought their own miniature water ornament!!!

After that I was looking for the ducks for a competition, I found them all and helped some girls out with the same competiton (I'm nice like that) then I entered another competition with 3 questions, one was about Anglian Water another was about Climate Change and the other was about Forests for Peterborough It's nearly judging time and i've only got a few more minutes so bye.

I'm at Peterborough Eco Awards to help promote what we have been doing as a school to be eco friendly. We have done lots of projects and our most recent one is an allotment which we are using to grow fruit and veg to use in the school kitchens and food tech rooms!

We think that hunt the duck was fun and clever. We also liked taking part in the journey quiz because because we learnt that there is a lot of transport to get to school. We learnt that there are lots of flowers to attract butterflies. We liked telling the judges about what we did at Oakdale. We've had a lot of fun so far now we are going to play some games.

School was buzzing from the minute the schools started to arrive yesterday!

120 pupils bursting with enthusiasm filled the display boards and tables with pictures, information, models, produce from their gardens, cakes and even some grass haired heads.

While the judges had the difficult task of choosing some winners the pupils played Hunt the Duck, jumped up and down to test out their pedometers from NHS Peterborough, quized 10 local environmental education providers about what they did, took part in a quiz themselves, wrote some blogs, ate a lot of fruit and most importantly found out what every other school there had been doing. Over lunch there was a carousel of activities provided by The Wildlife Trust, Clare Cottage, Greengage, Nene Park Trust, Sustrans, Forest for Peterborough, NHS Peterborough and the Climate Change Team.

The final part of the day was the presentations, there were a range of awards some were judged in advance from nominations made by the school and the other awards were judged on the day. The judges had a very difficult task, one of the judges said "these kids are so impressive I'd have been happy for any of them to win, choosing just one was really hard."
