Event Overview
‘Ranger Jim’ aka Jim Stevenson has worked in conservation in many parts of the world, but is known locally as the senior ranger for Huntingdonshire District Council, mainly at Paxton Pits.
He will give an entertaining talk about his career.
In Jim’s own words: “I can’t say I planned my life to be the way it has been; like the midden outside the cowshed, I just fell into it. Most of the jobs I have enjoyed did not exist when I was leaving school. They wanted me to be a policeman but I became a teacher of environmental studies.
My first conservation job was as education officer to the Wildfowl Trust, then posts with the RSPB and BirdLife International that took me round the World.
I had adventures and misadventures.
Eventually I decided to go back to reserve work at Paxton Pits where, at the age of 68, I’m now working part time.
A few years ago I won the BBC Wildlife Magazine Nature Writer of the Year award and the prize I chose was two weeks in Arctic Norway chasing sperm whales around. That was a bit different!”
