This June, at the Werrington Neighbourhood Council AGM, the Werrington Brook Improvements partnership project received the Environment Award in recognition of its dedicated contribution towards the local environment and the fantastic work that has been carried out so far.
The Werrington Brook Improvements project is a 5+ year programme looking at ways of holistically improving a sub-catchment of the River Welland. The area includes Marholm Brook, Brook Drain, Paston Brook, Werrington Brook and Cuckoo’s Hollow.
The project involves physical works to the river, community and business behaviour change work to tackle a range of pollutants at the source. The benefits of the project are already starting to become clear with noted water quality improvements and a greater range of habitats and wildlife residing in the area.
Now that the improvement scheme is well underway, this award highlights the recognition of the project team for all the hard work that is being invested into this local development project, which is offering a multitude of benefits for the environment, local residents and wildlife.
Chair Vince Moon gave the following comments when presenting the team with the award:
“A great outcome for Werrington and its residents and a showcase for what can be achieved when a range of organisations like the Environment Agency, PECT, PCC and Anglian Water work together along with the many volunteers who have given up their time to monitor the improvements through RiverCare.”
