Indulge your pupils’ imaginations and inspire them to learn that cooking is fun and rewarding with the Kids Country Winter Warmer Soup Challenge, a partnership event with PECT.
Stage 1: Create a soup recipe (28 October 2019)
The challenge is to devise a recipe for a Winter Warmer soup. There is no cooking involved at this stage – just creativity! We encourage pupils to think about what type of locally grown food is available in the autumn; if it comes from a plant or animal, if it’s been farmed, caught or grown at home, and which smells and tastes remind them of autumn time. They can add a twist to an existing recipe or invent one from scratch.
Stage 2: Preliminary Judging (21 November 2019)
The first round of the judging will be made by the East of England Showground’s team of catering professionals. Eight teams will be selected for the Preliminary Judging round. They will be invited to prepare their soup with their school support/teacher within a cooking workstation environment at the East of England Showground.
Stage 3: Final soup tasting at Local Supermarket (29 November 2019)
The top three soups will be available for visitors at a local supermarket on Friday 30 November 2018 to taste, along with a table-top display showing the ideas behind your soup recipe. The visitors will be asked to complete a short survey about the soup.
The prize
The winning team will receive £200 of cooking equipment for its school, a trophy to display for one year, and a visit to a local farm for each winning pupil and their teacher. The two teams finishing as runners-up will also get to visit a local farm. The presentation of the winning prizes and certificates for the three finalist teams will be made at the schools’ assemblies after 10 December 2018 and by prior arrangement with each school.
Further entry information about the competition can be found here.
