Introducing a Green Social Prescriber to support community healthcare

The Healthy Green Orton initiative will see a new green social prescriber join the existing team at Nene Valley Hodgson Medical Practice, to provide tailored support for individuals with frailty and chronic health conditions – with a focus on nature and sustainability-based activities.

Their role will provide recommendations to patients to enhance both their physical and mental health by integrating them into their communities and promoting a more active, engaged lifestyle.

What is social prescribing?

Social prescribing is a healthcare approach that connects patients with non-medical activities to improve their overall wellbeing. Instead of solely relying on traditional treatments, social prescribing encourages participation in community-based activities such as gardening, yoga, art therapy, or volunteering. By engaging in these activities, participants can reduce isolation, boost confidence, improve wellness and create meaningful connections within their communities.

Healthy Green Orton is funded by Healthy Futures Fund (HFF) and supported by Peterborough City Council. The project aligns with Peterborough’s climate goals by promoting sustainable travel and reducing the environmental impact of healthcare. It aims to create a lasting legacy by offering a replicable model that can be scaled across other regions.
