Innovative tree planting for biodiversity
Thanks for scanning! So what are you looking at?
A wood meadow mini forest is an exciting and innovative planting approach inspired by Miyawaki forests, but with a twist. These compact forests, typically about the size of a tennis court (20 x 10 metres), blend wildflower meadows with native woodland species to create rich, overlapping ecosystems.
Wood meadows are unique because they combine meadow and woodland ecosystems in one harmonious space. Meadow wildflowers flourish in open sunlight, blooming from summer to early autumn, while shade-tolerant woodland wildflowers thrive under the trees, often flowering in early spring before the canopy closes. This overlap creates one of the most diverse plant communities, supporting a rich array of pollinators and other wildlife.
What’s a mini forest?
Unlike traditional Miyawaki methods, which rely on significant soil disturbance and biomass addition to improve urban tree establishment, our wood meadow mini forest takes a gentler approach. By minimising soil disruption, it protects the vital soil bacteria and fungal mycorrhiza already present, ensuring a natural balance that supports long-term growth.
The planting design mirrors the density of traditional hedgerows, with trees and shrubs spaced 0.4 metres apart. While the site size can vary (typically between 200–300 square metres), what’s essential is the variety in structure—this creates micro-habitats and micro-climates, maximising biodiversity and habitat potential.
How Does It Work?
To establish a wood meadow mini forest:
- Begin with a mix of native trees, shrubs, and meadow wildflowers.
- Space trees and shrubs at 0.4 metres, allowing natural competition and development.
- Over time, introduce woodland wildflowers once meadow species have established.
While some tree species may not thrive long-term, their natural life cycles enrich the habitat with essential deadwood, supporting insects and fungi. This cycle creates a dynamic, enduring forest community, set against the stunning backdrop of blooming wildflowers and the hum of pollinators.
A wood meadow mini forest isn’t just a planting scheme—it’s a vibrant, living ecosystem that transforms even small spaces into biodiversity havens. Perfect for creating beautiful, resilient green spaces that work in harmony with nature!
